STOP NC's "Don't Say Gay" Bill HB755
In early May, the NC House passed a bill requiring public schools to post on their website lesson plans and a list of instructional materials – HB755, as passed by the House
On 5/24, the North Carolina Senate took the bill (HB755) and completely rewrote it, injecting "Don't Say Gay" and anti-trans/forced outing language (HB755, rewritten by the Senate):
• The forced outing of non-binary/gender-nonconforming/trans youth (page 7, lines 25-26)
• Prohibiting "instruction" on sexual identities and gender orientations in grades K-3 (page 8, lines 4-9)
The rewritten bill was rushed through the Senate Education/Higher Education and Health Care Committees with no notice or time for public input and is now ready for a full Senate vote.
If passed by the Senate, the bill would go back to the House for a concurrence vote and could be on the Governor's desk for signing as quickly as June 1st.
WE MUST ACT NOW by letting our legislators and the Governor know how we feel about this bill. Click the button below to use an easy email and calling app provided by EqualityNC. Fill in the simple form with your contact information and the app will identify and email your specific legislators with the message EqualityNC has provided. You can edit and personalize the message before sending and even follow up with direct calls to your legislators through the app that includes providing you with talking points before the call is connected.
