“Behold, I Am Doing a New Thing”
The Rev. Terri Steed Pierce
Senior Pastor, Joy MCC, Orlando FL
During the early hours of Sunday, June 12, 2016, the worst mass shooting on US soil took place at The Pulse, a popular LGBTI nightclub in Orlando, FL. Before the shooting ended, 49 mostly young men and women including the shooter were dead and even more were wounded physically and emotionally. Into that chaos, tragedy and hopelessness, Rev. Steed-Pierce her congregation and ministry team spoke and gave living witness to our message of hope and God’s inclusive love. As MCC congregations have done through our 48-year history, Joy MCC ministered to a wounded community at its darkest hour. We will begin our weekend with a focus session where pastor Steed-Pierce will share the lessons learned in ministering into crisis and despair. Later that evening we will have a public screening of the film Upstairs Inferno which tells the story of an arson fire in a gay bar in New Orleans in an earlier era during which over 30 people lost their lives including the pastor, assistant pastor and many members of Vieux Carre MCC. Then, as in Orlando, MCC led the caring response and provided a public voice and pastoral presence to their grief.
Rev. Steed Pierce will also preach God’s Word at three services, one Saturday and two Sunday morning.
